Speaker AI'm your host, Valerie, and whether you're here every week or this is your first time listening, welcome home.
Speaker AAround here, we talk about the real stuff.
Speaker AThe pivots, the pressures, the personal growth that comes with this stage of life.
Speaker ASo go ahead, grab your coffee or your tea, settle in, and let's get into it.
Speaker AToday's episode is all about something.
Speaker AI know.
Speaker AEvery single one of us has faced comparison.
Speaker ANot just the occasional glance at someone else's success, but the kind of comparison that sneaks in quietly, makes us question our journey, and sometimes keeps us stuck.
Speaker ABut I promise you, by the end of this episode, you'll feel lighter, freer, and more confident measuring your life with your own ruler.
Speaker ASo let's start with what this trap actually is.
Speaker AThe comparison trap is that sneaky little habit of measuring our worth, our success, even our happiness against someone else's highlight reel.
Speaker AIt's the voice that whispers you should be further along.
Speaker AIt's the silent measuring tape we pull out every time someone else shines.
Speaker AIt shows up in the grocery store.
Speaker AIt shows up at church, during brunch with friends.
Speaker ABut where it really thrives.
Speaker ASocial media.
Speaker AThe ultimate curated fantasy land.
Speaker AAnd here's the twist.
Speaker AWhen you're over 50, the comparisons often shift and take on some new form.
Speaker AIt's no longer about who got the promotion or maybe the bigger house.
Speaker ANow it's who's aging better, who has grandkids already, who's living their best retired life in Bali while you're trying to get to your knees to just stop popping.
Speaker AAnd the worst part?
Speaker ASociety loves to tell us what midlife should look like.
Speaker ABut can I just ask who handed them the rule book?
Speaker AThere's no universal timeline and there is definitely no one size fits all ruler.
Speaker ANow let's talk about what comparison does.
Speaker AWhile it might seem harmless, it it can have some serious side effects.
Speaker AIt breeds self doubt.
Speaker AIt can dim your confidence.
Speaker AIt whispers lies like you're behind, you're not enough or you missed your moment.
Speaker AAnd over time, that constant comparison can drain your joy and motivation.
Speaker AIt can be toxic.
Speaker AIt robs us of joy, peace and confidence.
Speaker AWe've all been there.
Speaker AAnd yes, so have I.
Speaker AI've in the past compared my career to others.
Speaker ABut in the long run, I realized that I was where I was supposed to be, doing what I was supposed to be doing.
Speaker AEven at times, in today's world of social media content creation, you can't help but look at the work of other people who what they're doing and think, why are they getting more likes or more engagement or more comments than me?
Speaker ABut here's what I've learned.
Speaker AWhen we measure our lives by someone else's yardstick, we will always come up short because that ruler was never meant for us.
Speaker ABut why do we even compare?
Speaker ALet's break it down.
Speaker AWell, blame it on our biology.
Speaker AComparison is hardwired into us, actually.
Speaker APsychologists say that it's part of our survival instinct, a way to figure out where we fit in.
Speaker ABut now, with 247 access to everyone's curated highlight reels, we're constantly on, we are constantly observing, we are constantly measuring.
Speaker AAnd let's be honest, life transitions like retirement, empty nesting, or health shifts make us more vulnerable.
Speaker AWe start wondering, am I doing this right?
Speaker AOr worse, did I miss my moment?
Speaker AOr there's no standard blueprint for becoming.
Speaker AIt's just your blueprint.
Speaker AAll right, now let's talk about solutions and how to break free from the comparison trap.
Speaker AHere are five powerful ways to break free from that trap and reclaim your joy.
Speaker AThe first, I'd say, is awareness.
Speaker AStart by noticing when and where it shows up.
Speaker AIs it social media?
Speaker AIs it a specific friend group?
Speaker AOr even a certain time of the day?
Speaker AAwareness is the first step to freedom.
Speaker ASecond is gratitude.
Speaker AI know it sounds simple, but it works.
Speaker AStart with a gratitude practice.
Speaker AMaybe shift your focus from what you lack to what you have, even just listing three things each day that you're thankful for.
Speaker AIt could be as simple as I woke up pain free today or I got to see and play with my grandchild.
Speaker AGratitude redirects your focus from what's missing to what's meaningful.
Speaker AIt rewires your brain and reminds you that your life is full.
Speaker ANumber three is curate your inputs.
Speaker AYou need to protect your peace.
Speaker AI'm doing that more and more these days.
Speaker ATake stock of who you follow and what content you can consume.
Speaker AIf it doesn't inspire, if it doesn't educate, if it doesn't uplift, then unfollow.
Speaker AIt's not personal, it's protective.
Speaker ASay no to conversations that become competitions.
Speaker ARemember, you decide what energy you allow in your space.
Speaker AAnd number four is self compassion.
Speaker ATalk to yourself like you would your best friend.
Speaker ATell yourself you're doing better than you think.
Speaker ARemind yourself that you are not her and you never were meant to be her, whoever she is.
Speaker AYour story is unfolding exactly as it should.
Speaker ACelebrate your wins, honor your journey.
Speaker AYour story is yours and that makes it an awesome story.
Speaker AAnd number five is set your own standards.
Speaker ADefine what success looks like for you.
Speaker AWhat does your version of a beautiful, fulfilled life look like?
Speaker ANot your sister, not your co worker, not the girl with the matching luggage on Instagram.
Speaker AWhat do you want this next season to look like?
Speaker ALike, maybe it's peace, maybe it's legacy.
Speaker AMaybe it's starting something new at 58.
Speaker AWhatever it is, write your own definition.
Speaker ANow, I'm not saying that comparison is all bad.
Speaker ASometimes comparison can inspire us.
Speaker AIt can show us what's possible.
Speaker ABut here's the key.
Speaker AWe need to use it as a mirror, not a measuring stick.
Speaker AInstead of why not me, ask what does that stir up in me?
Speaker AAnd then ask, how can I turn that into action for myself?
Speaker ALet comparison motivate, not diminish you.
Speaker AI want to leave you with a reflection exercise sometimes this week.
Speaker ATake, let's say, five to 10 quiet minutes, journal, or even use your voice notes your answers to these questions.
Speaker ABe honest now.
Speaker AThere's no judgment.
Speaker AWhere does comparison show up for me?
Speaker AThat would be your first question.
Speaker AThe second one is, how does it make me feel?
Speaker AAnd then the third is, what's one area that I want to stop comparing and start celebrating?
Speaker AThis small act of awareness can be a big turning point.
Speaker ASis, your life is not late.
Speaker AIt's not lacking.
Speaker AIt's not less than.
Speaker AIt's yours.
Speaker AAnd that alone makes it worthy.
Speaker AYou're not missing anything.
Speaker AYou're in your own lane, running your own race.
Speaker AAnd the only person that you need to compete with is the version of you from yesterday.
Speaker AYou are becoming exactly who you were meant to be in your time and in your way.
Speaker ADon't let someone else's lane distract you from your own path.
Speaker ARemember comparison might not Remember comparison might knock on your door, but you don't have to let it move in.
Speaker AIf today's episode spoke to you, share it with a friend who needs this reminder.
Speaker AYou never know who is silently struggling behind a scroll.
