Speaker A

Have you ever caught yourself mid scroll on social media looking at someone else's perfectly filtered life and thought, he's got it all together, why can't I?

It's good to be alive, but it's best to truly let your spirit fly.

Speaker A

Around here, we talk about the real stuff.

Speaker A

The pivots, the pressures, the personal growth that comes with this stage of life.

Speaker A

So go ahead, grab your coffee or your tea, settle in, and let's get into it.

Speaker A

Today's episode is all about something.

Speaker A

I know.

Speaker A

Every single one of us has faced comparison.

Speaker A

Not just the occasional glance at someone else's success, but the kind of comparison that sneaks in quietly, makes us question our journey, and sometimes keeps us stuck.

Speaker A

But I promise you, by the end of this episode, you'll feel lighter, freer, and more confident measuring your life with your own ruler.

Speaker A

So let's start with what this trap actually is.

Speaker A

The comparison trap is that sneaky little habit of measuring our worth, our success, even our happiness against someone else's highlight reel.

Speaker A

It's the voice that whispers you should be further along.

Speaker A

It's the silent measuring tape we pull out every time someone else shines.

Speaker A

It shows up in the grocery store.

Speaker A

It shows up at church, during brunch with friends.

Speaker A

But where it really thrives.

Speaker A

Social media.

Speaker A

The ultimate curated fantasy land.

Speaker A

And here's the twist.

Speaker A

When you're over 50, the comparisons often shift and take on some new form.

Speaker A

It's no longer about who got the promotion or maybe the bigger house.

Speaker A

Now it's who's aging better, who has grandkids already, who's living their best retired life in Bali while you're trying to get to your knees to just stop popping.

Speaker A

And the worst part?

Speaker A

Society loves to tell us what midlife should look like.

Speaker A

But can I just ask who handed them the rule book?

Speaker A

There's no universal timeline and there is definitely no one size fits all ruler.

Speaker A

Now let's talk about what comparison does.

Speaker A

While it might seem harmless, it it can have some serious side effects.

Speaker A

It breeds self doubt.

Speaker A

It can dim your confidence.

Speaker A

It whispers lies like you're behind, you're not enough or you missed your moment.

Speaker A

And over time, that constant comparison can drain your joy and motivation.

Speaker A

It can be toxic.

Speaker A

It robs us of joy, peace and confidence.

Speaker A

We've all been there.

Speaker A

And yes, so have I.

Speaker A

I've in the past compared my career to others.

Speaker A

But in the long run, I realized that I was where I was supposed to be, doing what I was supposed to be doing.

Speaker A

Even at times, in today's world of social media content creation, you can't help but look at the work of other people who what they're doing and think, why are they getting more likes or more engagement or more comments than me?

Speaker A

But here's what I've learned.

Speaker A

When we measure our lives by someone else's yardstick, we will always come up short because that ruler was never meant for us.

Speaker A

But why do we even compare?

Speaker A

Let's break it down.

Speaker A

Well, blame it on our biology.

Speaker A

Comparison is hardwired into us, actually.

Speaker A

Psychologists say that it's part of our survival instinct, a way to figure out where we fit in.

Speaker A

But now, with 247 access to everyone's curated highlight reels, we're constantly on, we are constantly observing, we are constantly measuring.

Speaker A

And let's be honest, life transitions like retirement, empty nesting, or health shifts make us more vulnerable.

Speaker A

We start wondering, am I doing this right?

Speaker A

Or worse, did I miss my moment?

Speaker A

Or there's no standard blueprint for becoming.

Speaker A

It's just your blueprint.

Speaker A

All right, now let's talk about solutions and how to break free from the comparison trap.

Speaker A

Here are five powerful ways to break free from that trap and reclaim your joy.

Speaker A

The first, I'd say, is awareness.

Speaker A

Start by noticing when and where it shows up.

Speaker A

Is it social media?

Speaker A

Is it a specific friend group?

Speaker A

Or even a certain time of the day?

Speaker A

Awareness is the first step to freedom.

Speaker A

Second is gratitude.

Speaker A

I know it sounds simple, but it works.

Speaker A

Start with a gratitude practice.

Speaker A

Maybe shift your focus from what you lack to what you have, even just listing three things each day that you're thankful for.

Speaker A

It could be as simple as I woke up pain free today or I got to see and play with my grandchild.

Speaker A

Gratitude redirects your focus from what's missing to what's meaningful.

Speaker A

It rewires your brain and reminds you that your life is full.

Speaker A

Number three is curate your inputs.

Speaker A

You need to protect your peace.

Speaker A

I'm doing that more and more these days.

Speaker A

Take stock of who you follow and what content you can consume.

Speaker A

If it doesn't inspire, if it doesn't educate, if it doesn't uplift, then unfollow.

Speaker A

It's not personal, it's protective.

Speaker A

Say no to conversations that become competitions.

Speaker A

Remember, you decide what energy you allow in your space.

Speaker A

And number four is self compassion.

Speaker A

Talk to yourself like you would your best friend.

Speaker A

Tell yourself you're doing better than you think.

Speaker A

Remind yourself that you are not her and you never were meant to be her, whoever she is.

Speaker A

Your story is unfolding exactly as it should.

Speaker A

Celebrate your wins, honor your journey.

Speaker A

Your story is yours and that makes it an awesome story.

Speaker A

And number five is set your own standards.

Speaker A

Define what success looks like for you.

Speaker A

What does your version of a beautiful, fulfilled life look like?

Speaker A

Not your sister, not your co worker, not the girl with the matching luggage on Instagram.

Speaker A

What do you want this next season to look like?

Speaker A

Like, maybe it's peace, maybe it's legacy.

Speaker A

Maybe it's starting something new at 58.

Speaker A

Whatever it is, write your own definition.

Speaker A

Now, I'm not saying that comparison is all bad.

Speaker A

Sometimes comparison can inspire us.

Speaker A

It can show us what's possible.

Speaker A

But here's the key.

Speaker A

We need to use it as a mirror, not a measuring stick.

Speaker A

Instead of why not me, ask what does that stir up in me?

Speaker A

And then ask, how can I turn that into action for myself?

Speaker A

Let comparison motivate, not diminish you.

Speaker A

I want to leave you with a reflection exercise sometimes this week.

Speaker A

Take, let's say, five to 10 quiet minutes, journal, or even use your voice notes your answers to these questions.

Speaker A

Be honest now.

Speaker A

There's no judgment.

Speaker A

Where does comparison show up for me?

Speaker A

That would be your first question.

Speaker A

The second one is, how does it make me feel?

Speaker A

And then the third is, what's one area that I want to stop comparing and start celebrating?

Speaker A

This small act of awareness can be a big turning point.

Speaker A

Sis, your life is not late.

Speaker A

It's not lacking.

Speaker A

It's not less than.

Speaker A

It's yours.

Speaker A

And that alone makes it worthy.

Speaker A

You're not missing anything.

Speaker A

You're in your own lane, running your own race.

Speaker A

And the only person that you need to compete with is the version of you from yesterday.

Speaker A

You are becoming exactly who you were meant to be in your time and in your way.

Speaker A

Don't let someone else's lane distract you from your own path.

Speaker A

Remember comparison might not Remember comparison might knock on your door, but you don't have to let it move in.

Speaker A

If today's episode spoke to you, share it with a friend who needs this reminder.
