Speaker ALet your spirit fly.
Speaker ACelebrate the journey every single day.
Speaker AAging with grace and style in our own special way.
Speaker AWelcome to Aging with Grace and Style, the show that proves getting older doesn't mean slowing down.
Speaker AI'm your host, Valerie.
Speaker AAnd if you're new here, first of all, welcome.
Speaker AIf you've been rocking with me for a while, then of course, welcome back.
Speaker AThis is where we get real about midlife and beyond.
Speaker AWith grace, confidence, and sometimes a little humor.
Speaker AWe talk about the stuff that no one prepares us for, but we figure it out together.
Speaker AAnd today we're talking about something that we've all experienced.
Speaker AThose moments when life just be lifein.
Speaker ANow listen, this episode was supposed to go out on Tuesday morning, just like always.
Speaker AI usually record about a week or two in advance and I pride myself on keeping that rhythm.
Speaker ABut phew, life has been lifein'and.
Speaker AFor a minute, I thought about just skipping a week, giving myself a pass.
Speaker ABut I couldn't do it.
Speaker AI reminded myself of what I often say, show up, even if it's imperfect.
Speaker ASo here I am, a little behind, a little tired, but still here.
Speaker ABetter late than never, right?
Speaker ASo you know those perfectly laid plans that we all make?
Speaker AThe vision boards, the calendars, the color coded to do list?
Speaker AOh, is it just me who does all of that and more?
Speaker AYeah, life takes one look at all that and says, that's cute.
Speaker ABut here's what we're really going to do.
Speaker ASo let's talk about how to roll with the punches and maybe even come out swinging.
Speaker ALet's start with this truth bomb.
Speaker ALife is unpredictable.
Speaker AYou can plan, prepare and plot.
Speaker ABut sometimes life says, hold my coffee.
Speaker AIt's like trying to nail jello to a wall.
Speaker AMessy, frustrating, and ultimately futile.
Speaker ABut here's the twist.
Speaker AThat unpredictability.
Speaker AIt's also what makes life exciting.
Speaker AIt's what keeps us growing.
Speaker ABecause in those moments of chaos, we find resilience that we didn't know we had.
Speaker ALet's call out a few of those curveballs.
Speaker AThere's the health scare that comes out of nowhere.
Speaker AThe job shift that you didn't see coming.
Speaker AThe family drama that you never asked for.
Speaker AOr how about when your car suddenly needs a new transmission, or you're juggling aging parents and grown kids who still need you and relationships.
Speaker AJust when you think you figured someone out.
Speaker APlot twist.
Speaker AThe truth is, life's challenges don't check your age or your calendar.
Speaker AThey just show up.
Speaker AYou don't grow out of them.
Speaker AThese surprises don't just mess up your day.
Speaker AThey can derail entire life plans.
Speaker AThat dream vacation, postponed.
Speaker AThat promotion that you've been working your butt off for, delayed because of budget cuts, or they're going in a different direction.
Speaker AThat project that you were finally ready to launch, suddenly not the priority.
Speaker AI've been in a position where I have worked on a project for months to be told we are pivoting to something else.
Speaker AAnd in those moments, it is so easy to want to throw in the towel.
Speaker ABut here's where it gets personal.
Speaker AJust a couple of weeks ago, my mom was scheduled for eye surgery.
Speaker AI packed.
Speaker AAnd when I say I packed, trust me, I packed.
Speaker AI had some content to create, so I had that with me.
Speaker AI had ordered some small lights on Amazon to be delivered there to make sure the lighting would be right when I was creating the content.
Speaker AYou name it, I was ready.
Speaker ASometimes I do over prepare.
Speaker AAnyway, I drove four hours and planned to stay the week to take care of her or to get on her nerves, depending on which of us is telling this story.
Speaker AEverything was in place.
Speaker ABut right as they were preparing her for the procedure, they stopped.
Speaker AHer blood pressure was too high to continue.
Speaker ANo surgery.
Speaker AJust like that, the whole plan flipped.
Speaker AI had to pivot, take her to her primary care doctor, and come back home.
Speaker ATalk about a curveball.
Speaker ABut here's the thing.
Speaker AI truly believe everything happens for a reason.
Speaker ASo I chose to roll with it.
Speaker ABecause that's what life sometimes requires.
Speaker AGrace in the moment and the flexibility to say, okay, let's adjust the secret sauce.
Speaker AFlexibility.
Speaker AThink of yourself like a willow tree.
Speaker ABend, but don't break.
Speaker AResilience is like emotional strength training.
Speaker AYou don't get it without the reps.
Speaker ALet's talk about the power of plan B and C and D.
Speaker AHaving backup plans isn't a sign of weakness.
Speaker AIt's really wisdom.
Speaker AIt's saying, I'm not putting all my peace in one outcome.
Speaker AAnd sometimes that flexibility shows up as asking for help shifting timelines or even giving yourself permission to rest, which I honestly need to do.
Speaker ABe better at.
Speaker AHere's where the real magic happens.
Speaker AEvery setback is a setup for a comeback.
Speaker ALost your job?
Speaker AMaybe that's the push to finally start your business.
Speaker AOr the push to leave a job that you had outgrown but stayed because you were comfortable.
Speaker ARelationship ended.
Speaker ANow you've got space for healing and maybe rediscovery.
Speaker AThink about the time something didn't go according to plan and yet it led you to something better.
Speaker AYou didn't see it at first, but in hindsight, that detour was divine.
Speaker ASo how do we embrace those chaotic moments without losing our minds?
Speaker AStart with humor.
Speaker ASeriously, laugh at it.
Speaker AI do that often because when I don't laugh, I'm probably somewhere stressing.
Speaker AOne day you'll laugh about showing up to a meeting with your skirt inside out or crying in the chick fil a drive thru.
Speaker ATrust me, I mean, neither has happened to me.
Speaker ABut I'm just saying it could be this or a similar situation.
Speaker AAnd when it does happen, share your stories.
Speaker AYou'd be surprised how many people will say girl, me too.
Speaker AAnd finally, remember this.
Speaker AIt's often the detours, not the destination, that shape our story the most.
Speaker ASo here's what I want you to take with you today.
Speaker ALife.
Speaker AWell, it's going to life.
Speaker ABut you.
Speaker AYou don't have to break every time it does.
Speaker AYou don't always have to turn lemons into lemonade.
Speaker ASometimes it's okay just to sit with it, pucker up and feel it.
Speaker ABecause even in the sour moments, there's growth.
Speaker AWe talked about the unpredictable predictability of life, the curveballs that it throws, how they impact our plans, and most importantly, how to stay flexible.
Speaker AFind the opportunity and embrace the chaos.
Speaker AYou're stronger than the storm.
Speaker AYou're wiser than you were a year ago.
Speaker AAnd no matter what life throws your way, you've got what it takes to bounce back, to regroup, and to keep going.
Speaker ASo here's your challenge this week and if you follow me and listen every week, you know there's always a challenge when life be lifein.
Speaker APause, breathe and ask yourself, what's the opportunity here?
Speaker AAnd if you find a little humor in the chaos, share it with someone.
Speaker AYou just might make their day.
Speaker AUntil next time.
Speaker AMy job is to just remind you to keep aging with grace, style and a healthy dose of just roll with it attitude.
Speaker AI'll see you next week.
