Speaker A

Let me ask you something.

Speaker B

When was the last time you laughed.

Speaker A

So hard your stomach hurt or did.

Speaker B

Something just because it made you happy, not because it was productive or responsible or expected?

Speaker B

Somewhere along the way, a lot of.

Speaker A

Us stopped prioritizing fun.

Speaker B

We became caretakers, workers, problem solvers, plate.

Speaker A

Spinners, and fun that got bumped to the bottom of the list.

Speaker A

But here's the truth.

Speaker A

Fun isn't frivolous.

Speaker A

It's fuel.

Speaker A

And today we're talking about why joy, play, and lightness aren't just nice to have after 50, they're necessary.

Speaker C

Living our Best Life it's good to be alive, but it's best to truly let your spirit fly.

Speaker C

So celebrate the journey every single day.

Speaker C

Aging with Grace and style in our own special way.

Speaker B

Welcome to Aging with Grace and Style, the podcast that reminds.

Speaker A

You Midlife isn't the end of your story.

Speaker A

It's the start of your next most vibrant chapter.

Speaker A

Valerie I'm your host, Valerie, and around.

Speaker B

Here we talk about what it means.

Speaker A

To show up fully, love ourselves deeply.

Speaker B

And live with unapologetic joy and confidence at every age.

Speaker B

This is part two of my Real.

Speaker A

Talk plus Real Life series.

Speaker B

Three episodes focused on the things that.

Speaker A

We carry, question, and crave in midlife.

Speaker A

In part one, we talked about body image, health, and emotional pressure in the weight of it all.

Speaker A

If you missed it, be sure to go back and catch that one.

Speaker B

Today we're shifting into something a little.

Speaker A

Lighter but just as important, and that's called joy.

Speaker A

Because fun isn't optional, it's essential.

Speaker B

So grab your coffee, your tea, or.

Speaker A

Your glass of something sparkly, and let's.

Speaker B

Talk about how to bring more fun back into your everyday life.

Speaker A

We don't age out of needing fun.

Speaker A

We don't outgrow joy, and we definitely.

Speaker B

Don'T need anyone's permission to play.

Speaker A

So let's get into it.

Speaker A

Why we stopped having fun, what's costing what it's costing us, and how to.

Speaker B

Reclaim that joy again.

Speaker A

If I asked you what fun looked like in your 20s or 30s, you.

Speaker B

Could probably rattle off a list.

Speaker A

I know I could.

Speaker B

But now many of us pause.

Speaker A

We say things like, I don't have.

Speaker B

Time, girl, I am too tired.

Speaker B

Or there's just too much to do.

Speaker B

And let me be clear, I totally get it.

Speaker A

Life is full for me.

Speaker A

I'm juggling a lot.

Speaker A

Work, church, responsibility, supporting my mom, keeping up with the podcast.

Speaker A

It's a lot.

Speaker B

And yes, some days, fun feels like a luxury.

Speaker A

But here's what I've realized when I.

Speaker B

Stop Making space for joy.

Speaker A

Everything feels heavier.

Speaker A

I become resentful.

Speaker A

I'm more drained.

Speaker B

I am pretty darn grouchy.

Speaker A

And honestly, I'm less me.

Speaker A

Here's a reflection prompt.

Speaker B

When.

Speaker A

When's the last time that you felt pure, unfiltered joy?

Speaker A

What were you doing?

Speaker A

And then I guess a big question is, why did you stop doing it?

Speaker A

You know how we talk about mental health, physical health, and emotional health?

Speaker A

Well, let's add joy health to the list.

Speaker A

Fun boost mood, it lowers stress, it increases creativity, and it reconnects us to our aliveness.

Speaker B

In fact, research shows that engaging in.

Speaker A

Leisure activities is linked to lower blood.

Speaker B

Pressure, lower cortisol, better sleep, and even stronger immune function.

Speaker B

Fun is not silly.

Speaker A

It's strategic.

Speaker A

It's not something to squeeze in.

Speaker A

It's something to schedule in.

Speaker A

So here's an example.

Speaker B

A friend of mine recently started taking salsa classes at 58.

Speaker A

She said, I was nervous at first, but the music, the people, the movement, it woke something up in me.

Speaker B

That's what fun does.

Speaker A

It wakes us up.

Speaker B

So if you're not sure where to.

Speaker A

Start, here are a few fun ideas to try this month.

Speaker A

You could join a beginner's dance class or a yoga class or a painting class.

Speaker B

Maybe host a grown woman game night.

Speaker A

That could include dominoes, charades, snacks and.

Speaker B

Music and a bunch of laughter.

Speaker A

Take yourself to a matinee or a solo lunch.

Speaker A

Try a new coffee shop or a.

Speaker B

Smoothie place, or walk through a bookstore.

Speaker B

Play your favorite throwback playlist and just dance in the kitchen.

Speaker A

Or start a low pressure hobby like maybe a puzzle or sketching or thrifting.

Speaker A

Take a day trip just to explore.

Speaker B

No agenda needed.

Speaker B

Just hang out.

Speaker B

Plan a solo yes day where you.

Speaker A

Say yes to anything that's joyful or low stakes.

Speaker A

Joy doesn't have to be big, it.

Speaker B

Just has to be intentional.

Speaker A

So grab your calendar right now, pause it if you have to, and ask where is my joy Schedule, not task, not appointments.

Speaker A

Joy start with just one moment this.

Speaker B

Week and then build from there.

Speaker A

I did the same exercise.

Speaker A

I looked at my calendar and I'm going to be honest, I didn't have any joy scheduled on my calendar.

Speaker A

Everything was task.

Speaker B

This is what I need to do.

Speaker A

To get this out.

Speaker A

This is what I need.

Speaker A

These are the meetings I have.

Speaker B

But then I added a couple of things.

Speaker A

So one thing that was added is, was a women's event, rather at our church it's a pottery making event and.

Speaker B

The other is in a few weeks.

Speaker A

A couple's bowling outing that's joy.

Speaker B

That's going to be fun.

Speaker B

And so now you do the same.

Speaker A

Check your calendar.

Speaker A

If you don't have anything on there, then add something.

Speaker A

You can always find some joy.

Speaker B

There's some good movies out.

Speaker B

So pick a movie.

Speaker B

Just do something.

Speaker A

Now, let's name the obstacles so we can move past them.

Speaker A

So let's say barriers.

Speaker A

Barrier number one.

Speaker A

I feel guilty.

Speaker A

We've been taught to be selfless, to work hard, to earn rest and pleasure.

Speaker B

But joy doesn't have to be earned.

Speaker A

Joy should be your birthright.

Speaker B

So try this.

Speaker A

Reframe.

Speaker A

When I prioritize fun, I come back.

Speaker B

To my responsibilities more energized and present.

Speaker A

Barrier number two.

Speaker A

I don't know what I enjoy anymore.

Speaker B

Now, this one is real.

Speaker B

After decades of caring for others, we sometimes forget what we like.

Speaker A

So start by thinking, what did I enjoy as a child?

Speaker A

Now, it might not be the same thing that you enjoy now, but that gives you some point of reference.

Speaker B

Or what brings me peace or laughter.

Speaker A

Now, what's something that I've always been curious about?

Speaker A

Then try one small experiment a week.

Speaker B

No pressure.

Speaker A

You're just going through discovery at this point.

Speaker B

Barrier three.

Speaker A

I don't have anyone to do it with.

Speaker A

You don't need permission or a plus one to enjoy yourself.

Speaker B

Take yourself out.

Speaker A

Laugh by yourself.

Speaker B

Be your own date.

Speaker A

That's not lonely.

Speaker B

It's powerful.

Speaker B

I'm going to be honest.

Speaker A

Some of my most fun moments.

Speaker A

I love being with my girls.

Speaker A

I love being with my husband.

Speaker A

But I also love being with me.

Speaker A

It could be just going to a.

Speaker B

Coffee bar.

Speaker A

Shopping, or even just turning.

Speaker B

On some music and having a dance party.

Speaker A

That's joy.

Speaker B

Some of my favorite memories, as I.

Speaker A

Said, come from doing the simple things.

Speaker B

Like walking through a park, getting dressed just for me, watching a show with.

Speaker A

No guilt, having a dance party.

Speaker A

That quiet joy is real joy, too.

Speaker A

So let me tell you something.

Speaker A

The women that I admire the most aren't just wise or successful.

Speaker A

They're joyful.

Speaker B

They laugh loudly.

Speaker B

They show up as themselves.

Speaker A

They've stopped asking for permission.

Speaker B

That's what I want us to do.

Speaker B

Aging out loud means saying yes to.

Speaker A

What feels good, letting yourself be seen.

Speaker B

Laughing from the belly, choosing clay.

Speaker B

Even in the midst of hard seasons, fun doesn't cancel out your responsibility.

Speaker A

It helps you carry them better.

Speaker A

I got a DM from a listener who said val.

Speaker B

I started doing Taco Tuesday solo at this little spot in town.

Speaker B

I used to wait for someone to.

Speaker A

Go with, but now it's my thing.

Speaker B

And honestly, it's the best part of my week.

Speaker A

That right there.

Speaker A

That's what aging out loud looks like.

Speaker A

So your challenge for the week is to plan one thing just for fun.

Speaker A

It can be small, it can be totally silly.

Speaker A

It can be solo.

Speaker A

But do it on purpose and watch what shifts.

Speaker B

Try this joy ritual.

Speaker A

This week, pick your joy song, which could be a throwback that gets you dancing your joy outfit, the thing that.

Speaker B

You feel good in, not just presentable.

Speaker A

A joy action, even 10 minutes of something you love.

Speaker A

Joy is a spiritual practice, and you deserve to practice it often.

Speaker A

So we've talked today about reclaiming fun not as a reward, but as a necessity.

Speaker A

You don't need to be younger or freer or thinner to enjoy your life.

Speaker B

You just need to give yourself permission to live it.

Speaker A

So this week, I hope you laugh louder, I hope you dance longer and.

Speaker B

Say yes to joy without guilt.

Speaker A

Because you're not too old and you're not too busy.

Speaker A

You're right on time for the kind of fun that fills you up.

Speaker A

This episode is part two of my Real Talk Real Life series, where we're being honest about what we need as women over 50.

Speaker A

Next week, we're wrapping up the series with you're not the only one.

Speaker A

It's a conversation about the things that.

Speaker B

We secretly google and silently wonderful.

Speaker A

And let me tell you, you are not alone.

Speaker B

If this episode spoke to you, then.

Speaker A

Tag a friend or send it her way.

Speaker A

Sometimes joy just needs an invitation, and this could be hers.

Speaker A

Until next time, Keep shining, keep playing.

Speaker B

And keep aging out loud with grace.

Speaker A

Style and a touch of satin.
