Speaker A

You ever look back at something that used to keep you up at night and now you're like, why did I ever care that much?

Speaker A

I mean, really, the way we used to twist ourselves up trying to keep the peace, fix everything, explain ourselves, or avoid being misunderstood?

Speaker A

At this point in life, the peace is mine.

Speaker A

The explanation is optional.

Speaker A

And honestly, if it doesn't bring me joy, peace, or a good laugh, I'm not available.

Speaker B

Celebrate the journey every single day.

Speaker B

Aging with Grace and style.

Speaker B

Being a Home Spirit Special.

Speaker A

Hey, friend.

Speaker A

Welcome to Aging with Grace and Style.

Speaker A

I'm Valerie, and this is episode one of the Unfiltered and Free series.

Speaker A

This is where we stop tiptoeing and we start talking about the freedom that comes with age, confidence, and letting go of what used to hold us back.

Speaker A

And today we're talking about the subtle, powerful beauty of caring less.

Speaker A

Not being careless, but being free from caring about what doesn't matter.

Speaker A

So pour your coffee, take a deep breath, and let's get into it.

Speaker A

Let's name a few things that we used to stress about being liked by people that we didn't even like saying yes just to avoid guilt wearing the right thing.

Speaker A

Even when it didn't feel like us responding to every text, email, or you got a minute with urgency, keeping our feelings bottled up so no one was uncomfortable.

Speaker A

I've always been the responsible one, the dependable one.

Speaker A

Not because I was trying to be a people pleaser, but because I genuinely cared that somewhere along the way that turned into doing too much, explaining too much, and carrying the weight that wasn't mine to hold.

Speaker A

I used to say yes to things that I didn't even want to do just to avoid the awkwardness of saying no.

Speaker A

Now, if I don't want to go to lunch, then I'm not going.

Speaker A

No guilt, no explanation.

Speaker A

There's a different kind of freedom that comes with midlife, when you stop managing perceptions and you start honoring your peace.

Speaker A

Now don't get me wrong.

Speaker A

I'm not saying walk around unapproachable and unavailable like nobody matters.

Speaker A

Being unbothered doesn't mean being cold.

Speaker A

It means choosing what's worth your time, your peace, and your voice.

Speaker A

Here's what it does me.

Speaker A

You can hold a boundary without holding a grudge.

Speaker A

You can release control and trust that what's meant for you won't miss you.

Speaker A

You can say no with kindness and without apology.

Speaker A

It's like this.

Speaker A

You don't stop caring.

Speaker A

You just stop over caring about things that don't deserve the front row in your life.

Speaker A

Let's have a little fun with a little light hearted quiz I came up with.

Speaker A

You're going to give yourself one point for each.

Speaker A

Yes.

Speaker A

Question number one.

Speaker A

Have you ever apologized to a delivery person for your house being messy, even if it wasn't?

Speaker A

Question number two.

Speaker A

Have you ever said sorry for having an opinion in a group chat?

Speaker A

Have you apologized to your plants for not watering them on time?

Speaker A

And then number four.

Speaker A

Have you ever explained in detail why you couldn't attend something and then added, but let me know next time?

Speaker A

Okay, here's how you score.

Speaker A

If you have zero to one point, then you are officially unbothered.

Speaker A

Two to three points.

Speaker A

Welcome to the club.

Speaker A

You're getting there.

Speaker A

Four plus points.

Speaker A

There's a spa day and a no button in your future.

Speaker A

This isn't about shame.

Speaker A

It's about awareness.

Speaker A

Because every unnecessary sorry is a tiny chip in your confidence.

Speaker A

Now, if you scored a little high on that quiz, don't worry.

Speaker A

Trust me, we've all been there.

Speaker A

But one of the best parts of this season of life.

Speaker A

You start realizing what you're just too grown to keep doing.

Speaker A

Because at some point, I'm sorry to turns into I'm good.

Speaker A

Love you.

Speaker A

Enjoy.

Speaker A

So here are a few things that I'm too grown for now.

Speaker A

Group chats that stress me out.

Speaker A

Exit chat meetings that could have been an email.

Speaker A

Come on, just send me an email.

Speaker A

Feedback on my outfit, my hair or my grocery list.

Speaker A

Noted ignored events that start after eight.

Speaker A

Unless Beyonce is performing.

Speaker A

Girl, I got my pajamas on.

Speaker A

Now listen, knowing what you're too grown for is one thing, but actually living that truth, now that's the work.

Speaker A

Because old habits, they don't just disappear overnight.

Speaker A

Sometimes they creep back in with a calendar invite or a side eye or a little guilt trip from someone who means well.

Speaker A

So let's get into how to actually practice the art of caring less without losing your kindness or without carrying guilt.

Speaker A

Want to know how to get unbothered?

Speaker A

Okay.

Speaker A

Number one, check your why.

Speaker A

When you find yourself stressed or offended, then ask, why do I care?

Speaker A

If the answer is about proving, pleasing or performing, then you already know what to do.

Speaker A

Set your standards, not your explanations.

Speaker A

You don't owe everyone access or clarity.

Speaker A

No is a boundary I'm not available for.

Speaker A

That is a boundary.

Speaker A

I'm protecting.

Speaker A

My peace is a boundary.

Speaker A

Number three, detach from outcomes.

Speaker A

You can do your best, show up well, speak honestly, and still let go of how others receive it.

Speaker A

Not everything needs to be fixed.

Speaker A

Smooth or soft.

Speaker A

Sometimes it just is.

Speaker A

And four, celebrate yourself every time.

Speaker A

You don't over explain, overthink, or over function.

Speaker A

Then celebrate it.

Speaker A

You're building a new rhythm, one that centers you.

Speaker A

Here's an affirmation for this week.

Speaker A

Say it with me.

Speaker A

I am not required to carry what doesn't belong to me.

Speaker A

I am no longer shrinking to be seen as agreeable.

Speaker A

My peace is priority, and I protect it with grace.

Speaker A

So here's your reminder.

Speaker A

You can care deeply about people without caring what everyone thinks.

Speaker A

You can show up fully without over explaining your presence.

Speaker A

You can love hard, lead well and still say, that's not mine to carry.

Speaker A

The older we get, the more sacred our peace becomes.

Speaker A

And the beauty of this season?

Speaker A

You're not required to answer to every expectation.

Speaker A

You are free to care wisely, to show up intentionally, and to let go gracefully because you're unbothered and you're thriving.

Speaker A

If this episode made you smile, nod or exhale, then share it with a friend who's learning to care less about the noise and more about her joy.

Speaker A

Or better yet, DM me.

Speaker A

And tell me, what's one thing you've officially stopped caring about?

Speaker A

And don't forget, next week's episode is it's going to be a fun one.

Speaker A

It's entitled For Now Things I'm Too Grown.

Speaker A

For now, let's just say nothing is off limits.

Speaker A

Until next time, keep breathing, keep laughing, and keep aging with grace, style and a touch of sass.

Speaker A

Thanks for hanging out with me today.

Speaker A

If you love this this episode, do me a favor.

Speaker A

Share it with a friend and leave a quick review.

Speaker A

It's a small thing that makes a big difference.
