Have you ever stood in front of the mirror and thought, when did my body change and why didn't anyone warn me?
Speaker AOr maybe you've whispered to yourself after climbing a flight of stairs.
Speaker BThis didn't used to feel like a workout.
Speaker BLet's be real.
Speaker BThe relationship we have with our bodies, especially after 50, is layered.
Speaker AIt's emotional, it's physical, and sometimes it's complicated.
Speaker AToday, we're talking about the weight of it all.
Speaker AAnd I'm not just talking about pounds.
Speaker BWe're digging into body image, midlife health, and the confidence curve that so many of us ride in this season.
Speaker ASo if you've ever felt frustrated, confused, or even disconnected from the skin that you're in, pull up a seat.
Speaker AYou're not alone.
Speaker CLet your spirit fly.
Speaker CCelebrate the journey every single day.
Speaker CAging with grace and style in our own special way.
Speaker BWelcome to Aging with.
Speaker AGrace and Style, the podcast that celebrates women over 50 who are rewriting the.
Speaker BRules and embracing every chapter with confidence, purpose and power.
Speaker BI'm your host, Valerie, and around here.
Speaker AWe keep it real.
Speaker AWe talk about the tough stuff, the funny stuff, and the beautiful in between of midlife living.
Speaker AThis episode kicks off a special three.
Speaker BPart series I'm calling Real Talk plus Real Life.
Speaker BOver the next few weeks, we're getting.
Speaker AHonest about the things that women over.
Speaker B50 don't always say out loud.
Speaker AFrom our bodies to burnout to those.
Speaker BQuiet Google searches we hope no one sees.
Speaker AToday, we're starting with what we carry.
Speaker BPhysically, emotionally and mentally.
Speaker ASo grab your coffee, take a deep breath, and let's get into it.
Speaker AHere's the thing.
Speaker AThere's the physical weight, like the number.
Speaker BOn the scale, the changing metabolism, the clothes that fit differently.
Speaker ABut there's also the emotional weight, the pressure to look a certain way, the shame that we sometimes carry, and the.
Speaker BSilent comparisons that creep in.
Speaker ASo today, let's unpack all of it.
Speaker BThe weight we carry and how we can begin to set it down.
Speaker ALet's start with facts.
Speaker BHormone shift.
Speaker BMuscle mass decreases.
Speaker BMetabolism slows down.
Speaker BBelly fat becomes more stubborn.
Speaker ASleep can feel like a game of hide and seek.
Speaker BThese are not signs that you're failing.
Speaker AThey're signs that your body is doing.
Speaker BExactly what it's designed to do in this stage of life.
Speaker BBut here's what makes it hard.
Speaker BNo one prepared us for it.
Speaker BWe were told how to get through puberty.
Speaker AWe were warned about childbirth.
Speaker ABut menopause?
Speaker AAging?
Speaker BThe invisible changes that affect our energy digestion and how we feel in our skin.
Speaker ACrickets.
Speaker BWhen I say no one mentioned this to me.
Speaker AI mean, no one Older ladies at.
Speaker BChurch didn't talk about it.
Speaker AMy friends were my age, so it's not like they could give me a heads up.
Speaker BThe doctor just said, you're getting older.
Speaker AAnd there weren't as many over 50.
Speaker BInfluencers on social who openly talked about.
Speaker AThe changes as there are today.
Speaker ALet me give you an example.
Speaker AA friend of mine recently said, I'm.
Speaker BDoing the same workout and eating the same way and still gaining weight.
Speaker BShe was nearly in tears and I.
Speaker ASaid, girl, your body has shifted.
Speaker BYou're not broken.
Speaker BYou're just in a different season and that requires different tools.
Speaker AHere's a reflection prompt for you.
Speaker BWhat is one change your body has.
Speaker AGone through recently that you've been silently.
Speaker BBeating yourself up about?
Speaker BAnd then could you extend grace instead of judgment?
Speaker AFor me, it's the loss of muscle mass.
Speaker AMy thighs have always been toned.
Speaker AWell, today let's say they aren't quite as toned.
Speaker AAnd yes, I am trying to extend.
Speaker BGrace instead of judgment, but I'm also trying to do something about it.
Speaker BLet's pivot from numbers to nurture in this season, our health goals should go.
Speaker ABeyond getting skinny or fitting into that dress.
Speaker BLet's talk real goals.
Speaker ADo I have enough energy to do what I love?
Speaker ACan I move my body without pain?
Speaker AAm I sleeping well?
Speaker BFeeling strong and thinking Clearly?
Speaker BHealth after 50 becomes less about esthetics and more about vitality, which, by the way, can absolutely still include wanting to look good.
Speaker BThere's nothing wrong with that.
Speaker ABut what I'm saying is let's define.
Speaker BWhat healthy means to us.
Speaker ANow.
Speaker AHere's what's helped me Adding more protein and strength training, not just cardio.
Speaker BPrioritizing rest and recovery and not feeling guilty for it.
Speaker BGetting labs done regularly so I can understand what's happening inside and not just what's showing up outside.
Speaker BAnd when it comes to weight loss.
Speaker AYou'Re right, I am not a medical expert.
Speaker ABut what I can say is this.
Speaker BStart with curiosity and not criticism.
Speaker AInstead of asking, why can't I lose weight?
Speaker BAsk what is my body trying to tell me?
Speaker AHere's my weight loss story.
Speaker AI thought after my hip replacement surgery.
Speaker BWhen I was more mobile that the.
Speaker AWeight I had gained over the years.
Speaker BWould just drop off with a few.
Speaker AMissed meals and working out.
Speaker ANope.
Speaker AIt literally took me a couple of years to drop the weight.
Speaker AThe stuff I used to do no longer worked.
Speaker AMissing meals, not adding protein, having hormones all out of whack all affected my.
Speaker BAbility to lose weight.
Speaker AOnce I figured those things out and.
Speaker BGot the hormones suggested and paid attention to what I was doing.
Speaker BThen it started to work.
Speaker AHere's a mini tip.
Speaker AIf you've been trying to diet the same way you did, say in your 30s, then that method probably won't work now.
Speaker BTalk to your doctor who understands women's hormonal health.
Speaker BThere are new tools available that weren't.
Speaker AEven part of the conversation 10 years ago.
Speaker AOkay, let's go a bit deeper into this.
Speaker BYou've asked about weight loss and while this isn't a weight loss podcast, I hear you.
Speaker BHere's what the research and lived experience tells us.
Speaker AYou need more protein.
Speaker APeriod.
Speaker BAfter 50, we naturally lose muscle mass.
Speaker BProtein helps preserve that muscle, keeps us fuller, longer, and stabilizes blood sugar.
Speaker BAim to have protein at each meal.
Speaker BI try to add it into some snacks too because I typically don't get enough protein in my meals.
Speaker BAn example would be say, breakfast.
Speaker ATwo eggs with turkey sausage and a protein shake or a smoothie.
Speaker BI know it might sound like a.
Speaker ALot of food, but it really isn't.
Speaker ALunch could be grilled chicken salad with quinoa.
Speaker BDinner could be baked salmon and roasted vegetables and lentils.
Speaker ADon't be afraid of eating under Eating is one of the reasons weight loss stalls.
Speaker AYour body needs fuel to burn fuel and strength training isn't optional, it's essential.
Speaker AI'm really saying this for me as.
Speaker BI'm not a fan of strength training, but I know I have to do it.
Speaker BLifting weights even twice a week can.
Speaker AImprove metabolism, boost your mood, strengthen your bones, build confidence, and you don't need.
Speaker BTo bench press a car.
Speaker BStart with body weight exercises.
Speaker BPush ups against the wall, maybe squats.
Speaker BResistance bands and then hydration and fiber help everything move.
Speaker ASome say you should drink half your.
Speaker BBody weight in ounces of water.
Speaker BI actually try to get in at least 64 ounces per day as well.
Speaker AAs getting in fib.
Speaker AIf digestion has slowed down for you.
Speaker BThen this is a good place to start.
Speaker BI've actually recently started adding benefiber into.
Speaker AMy mornings as I am sure I'm.
Speaker BNot naturally getting in enough fiber.
Speaker ASo let's shift to the weight of.
Speaker BStress and what it's doing to your body.
Speaker AI have to be honest, right now I'm stressed.
Speaker AMy mom's been having some medical challenges and I've been going back and forth.
Speaker BTo San Antonio, which is a four.
Speaker AHour drive each way.
Speaker BShe'd of course rather be at her.
Speaker AHome, which I'm sure any of us would be want to be in this situation but right now, honestly, it's just not the safest option.
Speaker AAnd navigating that tension, it's hard.
Speaker AAdd on my full time job, trying to be excellent at work without dropping.
Speaker BThe ball, my role at church, leading.
Speaker AOur social media team, helping us stay.
Speaker BConnected and creative, and of course this podcast, which I love.
Speaker AIt's all things that I deeply care about.
Speaker ABut the truth is even the good stuff can weigh heavy.
Speaker AAnd stress, it doesn't just sit in.
Speaker BYour mind, it actually shows up in your body.
Speaker BChronic stress raises cortisol, which encourages belly fat.
Speaker AIt disrupts sleep and digestion.
Speaker AIt triggers cravings and emotional eating.
Speaker BIt drains your energy.
Speaker BIt slows healing.
Speaker AAnd get this, I recently had an.
Speaker BAppointment with my dermatologist who noticed that my scalp was inflamed.
Speaker BHe said that stress can also cause inflammation in your scalp.
Speaker BNow I'm trying to stop my hair thinning, not add to it with stress.
Speaker BSo if you've been saying I'm doing all the right things but nothing's changing, then check in with your stress.
Speaker AHere's a mini reset practice.
Speaker ATry a simple box breath.
Speaker AInhale for four, hold for four, exhale for four and hold for four.
Speaker BDo this for just about two minutes.
Speaker AYour body's going to thank you and give yourself grace.
Speaker AYou are doing a lot.
Speaker BYour nervous system is not a machine.
Speaker AOkay, let me be real with you.
Speaker BI have days when I feel amazing.
Speaker AAnd days when I nitpick everything.
Speaker BConfidence at this stage of life doesn't always come from the mirror.
Speaker AIt comes from keeping promises to yourself, from wearing something that makes you feel good.
Speaker ASaying no to comparison culture, celebrating what.
Speaker BYour body can do.
Speaker BAnd let's not forget, this body has.
Speaker ACarried us through grief, through parenting, through deadlines, and through decades.
Speaker AThat deserves respect.
Speaker AA quick story here.
Speaker BA listener once messaged me after I.
Speaker APosted a video where I wasn't perfectly posed or filtered.
Speaker AActually, I seldom use filters, she said.
Speaker AValerie, thank you for showing up like that.
Speaker BYou looked real and you made me feel seen.
Speaker BI didn't even realize it.
Speaker ABut that's the power of embracing where you are.
Speaker AConfidence isn't about being flawless.
Speaker AIt's about being free.
Speaker AFree to wear that swimsuit.
Speaker BFree to take up space.
Speaker AFree to speak your truth.
Speaker BEven with a few wrinkles and stretch marks.
Speaker AYour challenge for the week is pick one thing to celebrate about your body.
Speaker BSay it out loud, write it down.
Speaker AOr better yet, share it with another.
Speaker BWoman who needs to hear it.
Speaker BLet me leave you with a few.
Speaker APractical shifts that you can make this week.
Speaker BRethink the scale.
Speaker AUse it as one metric, not the master.
Speaker AConsider tracking energy, sleep, strength or mood instead.
Speaker ASo I have this smart ring that is helping me with this.
Speaker AI promise I'm going to post about it soon.
Speaker BHydrate and nourishment.
Speaker ASmall changes like more water, more color.
Speaker BOn your plate and eating enough protein really do add up.
Speaker BMove for joy, not just discipline.
Speaker ADance, stretch, walk with a friend.
Speaker BMovement doesn't have to mean punishment.
Speaker BAnd then speak kindly to yourself.
Speaker AIf you wouldn't say it to your best friend, then don't say it to your reflection.
Speaker ASo here's my final question to you.
Speaker AWhat would change if you treated your body like a partner and not a project?
Speaker BToday we talked about the weight of it all.
Speaker BNot just the physical pounds, but the.
Speaker AEmotional pressure and the mental noise that.
Speaker BOften comes with midlife changes.
Speaker AWe unpacked body shifts, new definitions of health, and how confidence is a practice, not a prize.
Speaker AWe added depth on nutrition, strength training.
Speaker BStress and why it's okay to slow down and care for yourself differently in this season.
Speaker AIf this episode spoke to you, then.
Speaker BI hope you walk away feeling lighter.
Speaker BNot just because of a number on.
Speaker AA scale, but because you gave yourself permission to feel good again in to trust your body to honor where you.
Speaker BAre now, not where you used to be.
Speaker AAnd hey, if you're still working on that relationship with your body, you're not late.
Speaker BYou're right on time.
Speaker AThis episode is part one of my Real Talk plus Real Life series.
Speaker AAn honest three part look at things.
Speaker BThat we silently carry and question as women over 50.
Speaker ANext up, we're going to talk about joy in aging out loud.
Speaker AThe title might change, but the premise.
Speaker BWill be the same.
Speaker AAnd why?
Speaker AFun isn't something that you grow out of, it's actually something that you grow into.
Speaker AAnd after that, we're going behind the search bar with.
Speaker AYou're not the only one.
Speaker AYou won't want to miss it.
Speaker BSo if this message resonated with you, share it with a friend or sister.
Speaker AWho might need the reminder that she's.
Speaker BNot alone in this season.
Speaker BLet's walk through it together.
Speaker AUntil next time.
Speaker AKeep shining, keep nourishing yourself and keep aging with grace style and a touch of satin.
