Have you ever caught yourself doing something that you don't even believe in anymore just because it's what people expect of you?
Speaker AThe smiling, the saying yes.
Speaker BThe holding your tongue, the being strong even when you're tired.
Speaker BThe showing up even when you'd rather rest.
Speaker BAt some point, you have to look.
Speaker AIn the mirror and say, I don't.
Speaker BHave to answer to that anymore.
Speaker CCelebrate the journey every single day.
Speaker CAging with grace and style in our own special way.
Speaker BHey, beautiful lady.
Speaker BWelcome back to Aging with Grace and Style.
Speaker BI'm your host, Valerie, and today we're.
Speaker AClosing out the Becoming series with a mic drop moment.
Speaker AIf you've ever felt boxed in by.
Speaker BLabels, too much, too old, not enough.
Speaker BThe strong one, the fixer, the one who keeps it all together, then this one's for you.
Speaker BToday we're going to name the expectations.
Speaker AThat we never asked for and release.
Speaker BThem with a little grace, a little.
Speaker AFire, and maybe even in red boots.
Speaker BOr a dress that makes no apologies.
Speaker ASo grab your coffee, your tea, or your favorite glass of something sparkly, and.
Speaker BLet'S get into it.
Speaker ALet's start with a little honesty.
Speaker BHow many of us have been called.
Speaker AToo much at some point?
Speaker AToo opinionated, Too emotional, Too loud?
Speaker AOr maybe the opposite.
Speaker ANot enough.
Speaker ANot thin enough, not soft enough, not young enough.
Speaker AAnd of course, there's the classic, aren't you too old for that?
Speaker AI remember a time someone said that to me.
Speaker AI was trying on a pair of red boots.
Speaker AYes, they were knee high.
Speaker AYes, with a heel.
Speaker AAnd yes, I felt fabulous.
Speaker BThe sales clerk looked at me and.
Speaker ASaid, kind of with a tone, oh, those are fun for someone your age, you know, I looked at her like.
Speaker BWhat do you mean, for someone my age?
Speaker ANow, I could have let it slide, but instead I bought the boots and.
Speaker BI wore them right out of the store.
Speaker AAnd let's be honest, I probably walked.
Speaker BA little slower on purpose, just so.
Speaker APeople, especially her, could see them.
Speaker ABecause here's the thing.
Speaker AIt's not always what people say.
Speaker AIt's the unspoken expectations.
Speaker ALike, after 50, you're supposed to become invisible.
Speaker AUnless, of course, someone needs something from you.
Speaker ALike advice, a casserole, a ride to.
Speaker BThe airport, or help with their Amazon return.
Speaker AYou get the picture.
Speaker ALet's be real.
Speaker BThese labels are like carrying around a.
Speaker ASuitcase full of bricks.
Speaker AOnly you don't.
Speaker AYou didn't pack it yourself.
Speaker ASomewhere along the way, we start quietly.
Speaker BRefusing to answer to those labels.
Speaker AMaybe you stop volunteering for every committee at work or church because it gets.
Speaker BTo be too much.
Speaker AI remember my Former pastor used to say that 20% of the people do 80% of the work.
Speaker AAnd trust me, I truly believe that.
Speaker BMaybe you started saying no to obligations that drained you.
Speaker AMaybe you booked that solo trip.
Speaker BMaybe you wore the red boots in that dress.
Speaker BYou didn't make a big announcement.
Speaker AYou just stopped playing along.
Speaker AAnd sometimes that's the most powerful move of all.
Speaker AHere are a few stories from women who did just that.
Speaker BCarol.
Speaker AShe's 62.
Speaker BShe told me I used to feel.
Speaker AResponsible for everyone's happiness.
Speaker AIf my kids were upset, if my husband was stressed, I thought it was my job to fix it.
Speaker ANow I listen, I support, but I don't carry it all.
Speaker AShe said she realized that she's not the family therapist.
Speaker AAnd you know what?
Speaker BAfter I read that note from Carol.
Speaker AIt so reminded me of me.
Speaker AFor some reason, I feel I need to be the fixer for everyone.
Speaker AI recently started paying attention to this.
Speaker AI'm not sure if it's a control thing or what it is, but it's something that I'm working on as it.
Speaker BWill wear you out.
Speaker BThen there's Linda.
Speaker AShe said a coworker once told her that you're too old to start something new.
Speaker BSo what does she do?
Speaker BShe started her own business.
Speaker BBest decision she ever made, she told me.
Speaker AAnd then there was a third one that wrote in, she wanted to remain anonymous.
Speaker ASo we'll call her Katie.
Speaker AShe said I stopped dyeing my hair.
Speaker AI was terrified at first, but now.
Speaker BI love my silver strands.
Speaker BThey're my badge of honor.
Speaker AAnd I'll just add, if you're still managing the group text, coordinating family vacations, and printing everybody's boarding passes, you're a.
Speaker BFull time project manager with no pto.
Speaker ANo bonus, and definitely no HR department.
Speaker AIt's okay to step back from all of that.
Speaker AIt doesn't make you selfish, it makes you smart.
Speaker ALet's be real.
Speaker ASome of the labels that we carried, we didn't choose.
Speaker ABut we can choose to stop answering to them.
Speaker ASo here are a few mic drop truths that I want you to carry into this week.
Speaker AYou're not too old to start over.
Speaker BYou're not required to be everyone's emotional life raft.
Speaker BYou are not responsible for keeping the peace at your own expense.
Speaker BYou're not too much.
Speaker AYou've just outgrown playing small.
Speaker ALet's make this practical.
Speaker ANumber one, say no.
Speaker APeriod.
Speaker AYou don't have to explain, you don't have to soften it.
Speaker BTry this.
Speaker ANo, I'm not available.
Speaker AAnd then, girl, sip your tea.
Speaker ANumber Two, check your inner voice.
Speaker AReplace I should with I choose.
Speaker ASay I choose to rest.
Speaker AI choose not to engage.
Speaker BI choose me.
Speaker B3.
Speaker AStart a done list.
Speaker AAt the end of the day, jot down what you did, even if it's just made up the bed and drank some water.
Speaker ACelebrate that, because some days, that's a win.
Speaker AAnd then four, be around people who get it.
Speaker BFind the folks who say, girl, wear the boots.
Speaker ANot the one who asks why, just the ones who say.
Speaker AAnd then text me the pictures of you in them.
Speaker AAnd then five.
Speaker BTry one new thing.
Speaker BNot for your resume, not for your family.
Speaker BJust for the you that's still becoming.
Speaker ATake the class, book the trip, buy the bright lipstick.
Speaker AIf not now, then when?
Speaker AAll right, before we close out, here are your official Becoming Series permission slips.
Speaker AYou have permission to wear whatever makes.
Speaker BYou feel good to brunch.
Speaker AYou have permission to take a nap and not apologize for it.
Speaker AYou have permission to not answer the phone just because it rings.
Speaker AYou have permission to say, that's not for me.
Speaker BYou have permission to be the main character in your own story.
Speaker AAnd most of all, you have permission to stop answering to labels that no longer fit.
Speaker AHere's an affirmation.
Speaker ASay it with me.
Speaker AListen to it, write it down, and say it later.
Speaker AI don't owe anyone the smaller version of myself.
Speaker AI am not too much.
Speaker AI am just enough.
Speaker BAnd I no longer answer to who.
Speaker AThey needed me to be.
Speaker BSo as we close out the Becoming.
Speaker ASeries, I want to remind you, you.
Speaker BAre not here to shrink.
Speaker AYou are not here to be convenient.
Speaker BYou are not here to live up.
Speaker ATo someone else's idea of who you.
Speaker BWere supposed to be.
Speaker AYou are here to shine.
Speaker AYou're here to evolve.
Speaker AAnd you're here to become.
Speaker ASo the next time someone tries to hand you an old label, smile, pause and think to yourself, I don't have to answer to that anymore.
Speaker AIf this series has spoken to your spirit, I'd love to hear from you.
Speaker ASend me a message, drop a comment.
Speaker BOr share your own.
Speaker AI don't answer to that anymore moment with me.
Speaker AI just might feature it in a future episode.
Speaker BAnd if you know a woman who's.
Speaker AStill figuring out who she's becoming, then send this episode and share the series with her.
Speaker ALet's start the conversation.
Speaker AUntil next time, keep rising, keep releasing, and keep aging with grace, style, and a touch of sass.
