Feeling Behind in Midlife? Why Women Over 50 Need to Rethink the Timeline

That feeling of being behind in midlife is more common than anyone admits — and in this episode, Valerie names it, unpacks it, and gives it right back where it belongs. If you've ever looked around at other people and thought, how did they get there? or shouldn't I be further along by now? — this episode is going to feel like a breath of fresh air. Valerie gets personal about her own experience stepping into retirement and realizing she didn't have the perfectly mapped-out plan she thought she should have. What she found instead was something more honest: there is no universal timeline, and that invisible checklist most of us are running? It was never ours to begin with. You'll walk away with a completely different lens on where you are right now — and the permission to stop grading yourself against a life you didn't fully choose.

Let me ask you something.
Speaker AHave you ever looked around at your life and for no clear reason, just felt like you were behind?
Speaker ANot behind on something small.
Speaker ANot behind on a deadline.
Speaker AI mean, behind in your life.
Speaker ALike somewhere along the way, you missed a step or maybe took a different turn or didn't move fast enough, and now you're looking around at other people thinking, how did they get there?
Speaker AWhy don't I feel more settled than this?
Speaker AShouldn't I have figured this out by now?
Speaker AIf that thought has ever crossed your mind, even quietly, you're not alone.
Speaker AAnd more importantly, you're not wrong for feeling it.
Speaker ABut we need to talk about why you feel it.
Speaker ABecause that feeling is not random.
Speaker BLiving our best life, it's good to be alive.
Speaker BBut it's best to truly live.
Speaker BLet your spirit fly.
Speaker BCelebrate the journey every single day.
Speaker BAging with grace and style in our own special way.
Speaker AHey, friend.
Speaker AWelcome back to Aging with Grace and Style, the place where we talk about what's real in this season of life.
Speaker ANot the polished version, not the highlight reel.
Speaker AThe real stuff.
Speaker AI'm Valerie, and if you've ever felt like you should be further along by now, this one is going to hit home.
Speaker AHere's what I've been realizing lately.
Speaker AThat feeling of being behind doesn't just come up out of nowhere.
Speaker AIt's coming from something.
Speaker ASomething most of us have been carrying for years without even realizing it.
Speaker AIt's an invisible checklist.
Speaker AAnd once you see it, you start to realize just how much it's been shaping the way you see your life.
Speaker ALet's call it what it is.
Speaker AThis isn't just a checklist.
Speaker AIt's a quiet scorecard.
Speaker AAnd whether we admit it or not, a lot of us are walking around grading ourselves.
Speaker AWe're looking at our lives and thinking, I should have more saved by now.
Speaker AI thought I'd feel more settled by this age.
Speaker AMy body should look different.
Speaker AI should know exactly what I'm doing at this point.
Speaker AAnd here's the part that really gets me.
Speaker AWe don't even stop to ask where those expectations are coming from.
Speaker AWe just assume if I haven't hid them, then something must be wrong with me.
Speaker AI've had moments recently where I've sat and thought about what this next phase of life looks like.
Speaker ARetirement.
Speaker ASlowing down, shifting priorities.
Speaker AAnd instead of feeling clear, I found myself feeling unsure.
Speaker ALike, wait, should I feel more ready than this?
Speaker AShouldn't I have a clearer plan?
Speaker AAnd I'll be honest with you, when I look around at other people in this stage, of life, especially when it comes to retirement.
Speaker AI see people who have it all mapped out.
Speaker AThey know exactly what they're going to do.
Speaker ASome are traveling, some already have part time work lined up, Some are starting businesses or diving into passion projects.
Speaker AThey have a plan.
Speaker AAnd then I look at me and I'm like, I don't have all of this mapped out.
Speaker ARetirement didn't hit me like some big dramatic moment.
Speaker AIt actually kind of snuck up on me.
Speaker AAnd if I'm being real, I haven't spent a lot of time planning it out in detail, or have I spent a lot of time thinking about it.
Speaker AI know I don't necessarily want to work for someone else, because if that's what I wanted to do, I just stay where I am.
Speaker AI actually like what I do.
Speaker ABut beyond that, I know I'll spend more time building my own thing, podcasting, writing, creating, spending time with Halo.
Speaker ABut I don't have this perfectly structured plan.
Speaker AAnd for a moment, that made me feel like I was behind, Like I missed something, Like I should be more prepared than I am right now.
Speaker ABut that feeling didn't come from truth.
Speaker AIt came from expectation.
Speaker AIt came from comparison.
Speaker AIt came from this idea that by a certain age, I should be a certain place.
Speaker AAnd here's why this matters more than we think.
Speaker ABecause that invisible checklist isn't just sitting in the background.
Speaker AIt's affecting how you experience your life.
Speaker AIt steals your presence.
Speaker AYou can be in a perfectly good moment laughing, relaxing, enjoying yourself.
Speaker AAnd then that thought creeps in, but I should be further along.
Speaker AAnd just like that, you're no longer in that moment.
Speaker AYou're measuring it.
Speaker AIt drains your energy.
Speaker ABecause carrying around the feeling that you're not where you're supposed to be, that's heavy.
Speaker AAnd in this season of life, we don't need anything else weighing us down.
Speaker AAnd if I'm being honest, it robs your joy.
Speaker ABecause it's hard to appreciate your life when you're constantly evaluating it.
Speaker AAnd this is where comparison really shows up.
Speaker AYou see someone, for example, since we had talked about retiring, let's go ahead and continue this.
Speaker AYou see someone retiring early, traveling, building something, looking like they have it all together.
Speaker AAnd you start doing that quiet comparison in your head.
Speaker AAnd I see this in real time.
Speaker AI'm part of a cohort group with people building businesses, different ages, different stages, different.
Speaker ADifferent levels.
Speaker AAnd I'll sit there sometimes listening to them talk about what they're doing, how clear they are, how far along they seem.
Speaker AAnd I've had moments When I thought, wait, should I be further along than this?
Speaker AShould I have more direction by now?
Speaker AAnd then I have to stop myself.
Speaker ABecause the truth is, everyone in that room is on a completely different path.
Speaker ADifferent timing, different priorities, different starting points.
Speaker AAnd here I am building something that's mine, figuring it out in real time.
Speaker AAnd that doesn't make me behind.
Speaker AIt just means I'm in the middle of creating something.
Speaker ASo let's shift this.
Speaker AThere is no universal timeline.
Speaker AThere never was.
Speaker AWe just believe there was.
Speaker ABecause in this season of life, women are doing all kinds of things at the same time.
Speaker ASome are starting over.
Speaker ASome are slowing down.
Speaker ASome are building.
Speaker ASome are resting.
Speaker ASome are caregiving.
Speaker ASome are rediscovering who they are.
Speaker AThere is no one version of what this stage of life is supposed to look like.
Speaker AAnd the idea that we're supposed to be done by now, finished, fully figured out, that doesn't even match real life.
Speaker AIf anything, this season brings more questions than answers.
Speaker AAnd I've had to make peace with that.
Speaker ABecause being in a season of figuring it out does not mean you're behind.
Speaker AIt means you're still evolving.
Speaker AAnd let me give you something to really sit with.
Speaker AYou're not behind.
Speaker AYou're just measuring yourself against a life that you didn't fully choose.
Speaker ASo what do we do with this?
Speaker AFirst, we need to call it out.
Speaker AThe next time you think I'm behind, pause and ask yourself, according to who?
Speaker ASecond, separate what's yours from what's not.
Speaker ASome of what you want is real, but some of it was handed to you.
Speaker AIt was handed to you from culture, from expectations, from what you thought life was supposed to look like.
Speaker AAnd it's okay to decide.
Speaker AThat part doesn't belong to me anymore.
Speaker AThird, ask a better question.
Speaker AInstead of asking, where should I be?
Speaker AAsk, what do I want my life to feel like right now?
Speaker ABecause most of us aren't chasing a timeline.
Speaker AWe're chasing a feeling.
Speaker APeace, stability, joy, confidence, freedom.
Speaker AAnd when you focus on the feeling, you start making decisions that actually align with your life.
Speaker AAnd finally, give yourself the same grace you give everyone else, because we are so much harder on ourselves than we need to be.
Speaker ASo here's what I want you to sit with this week.
Speaker AWhat part of your life have you been quietly judging because of a timeline that may not even be yours?
Speaker AAnd what would shift if you stopped measuring it?
Speaker AHmm.
Speaker ASome people are executing a plan.
Speaker AI'm still defining mine, and that doesn't make me behind.
Speaker AIt means I'm still building it.
Speaker ASo you are not behind.
Speaker AYou're not late.
Speaker AYou're not off track.
Speaker AYou're really living a life that has had twists, turns, pauses, pivots and growth.
Speaker AJust like it was supposed to.
Speaker AAnd this next chapter, it doesn't require you to catch up.
Speaker AIt just requires you to show up.
