Speaker A

There are some things about midlife that nobody really prepares you for.

Speaker A

Not your friends, not your family, and definitely not social media.

Speaker A

Because if you scroll long enough, it'll have you thinking, we're all just out here living our best, most put together lives.

Speaker A

And meanwhile you're sitting there like, wait, is it just me or is this a little different than I expected?

Speaker A

And I've had a few of those moments lately, moments where I've literally stopped and thought, okay, nobody told me this part, so today I want to talk about that.

Speaker B

Living our best life.

Speaker B

It's good to be alive, but it's best to truly let your spirit fly.

Speaker B

So celebrate the journey every single day.

Speaker B

Aging with grace and sty in our own special way.

Speaker A

Hey, friend.

Speaker A

Welcome back to Aging with Grace and Style.

Speaker A

The place where we talk honestly about midlife without pretending everything is perfect and without acting like this season is something to fear.

Speaker B

Valerie.

Speaker A

I'm Valerie.

Speaker A

And if you've ever found yourself thinking, why didn't anybody warn me about this?

Speaker A

Then this episode is for you.

Speaker A

I mean, the deeper shifts, the things that catch you off guard because nobody mentions them until you're already in the middle of them.

Speaker A

So go ahead, get comfortable, and let's get into it.

Speaker A

I'm going to share a few things no one really told me about midlife.

Speaker A

And more importantly, when I'm starting to realize along the way.

Speaker A

Because the realization part, that's where things start to shift.

Speaker A

No one told me how different my body would feel.

Speaker A

Let's just go ahead and start here, because this is usually where midlife shows up first.

Speaker A

Nobody really told me how much things could change.

Speaker A

Not all at once, but in small ways that add up.

Speaker A

Recovery takes longer, energy isn't always consistent, sleep can be hit or miss, and hormones, they're doing the most, they're doing their own thing, affecting mood, focus, and even confidence in ways you didn't quite expect.

Speaker A

And it's not always dramatic.

Speaker A

Sometimes it's just you do something that used to be easy and now you need to sit down afterwards.

Speaker A

You eat the same way you always have, and your body responds differently.

Speaker A

You look in the mirror and think, okay, when did that happen?

Speaker A

Or you bend down and pick something up and make a noise you didn't know you could make.

Speaker A

And when did I become the person who grunts when they stand up?

Speaker A

And let's be real, nobody told me about the random chin hairs either.

Speaker A

I'm just saying, that part right there, completely unnecessary.

Speaker A

And I'll give you some of my own examples because why not?

Speaker A

Some days I sit at my desk for a while, and when I stand up, I have to just pause for a second, give my body a moment to remember what we're doing.

Speaker A

Because the stiffness showed up without an invitation.

Speaker A

And apparently it's staying.

Speaker A

Or I'll pass a mirror and catch myself looking at the lines on my face that weren't there before.

Speaker A

Frown lines.

Speaker A

And I have to decide in that moment, am I going to make peace with this, or am I going to let it ruin my morning?

Speaker A

But here's the one that caught me the most off guard.

Speaker A

There are moments now where I'll second guess myself on things I'm usually completely confident about, things I know, things I've done a hundred times, and out of nowhere there's this little voice saying, are you sure?

Speaker A

And that one nobody warned me about, that one.

Speaker A

Because it's not just physical.

Speaker A

It sneaks into your head, too.

Speaker A

But here's what can make all of it even harder.

Speaker A

Most of us spent years being told to just push through, to stay strong, keep going, and not make a big deal out of how we feel.

Speaker A

And then midlife has the audacity to make it very clear that the old way doesn't always work anymore.

Speaker A

Now what I've realized that doesn't mean something is wrong with me.

Speaker A

It means my body is speaking a different language now.

Speaker A

And one of the biggest things I'm learning I don't need to fight my body the way it is now.

Speaker A

I need to start listening to her.

Speaker A

That might mean resting more.

Speaker A

That might mean moving differently.

Speaker A

That might mean paying closer attention to sleep, hormones, stress, and the signals that my body is giving me.

Speaker A

Not because I'm falling apart, but because I want to care for myself wisely.

Speaker A

In this season now, no one told me how emotional midlife could feel.

Speaker A

And not emotional like dramatic.

Speaker A

More like tender, reflective, sometimes heavier than you expected.

Speaker A

There are emotions in midlife that can catch you completely off guard.

Speaker A

You might feel grief about things you can't quite name, sadness about how fast time is moving, anger about all you've carried, and sometimes a strange mix of gratitude and loss at the exact same time.

Speaker A

Clarity and confusion, peace and uncertainty both at once.

Speaker A

And that can be confusing because a lot of us were taught to keep moving and not sit too long with what we feel.

Speaker A

What I've realized Emotions in midlife are not a sign that something is wrong.

Speaker A

Sometimes they're a sign that we're finally slowing down long enough to notice what's been there all along.

Speaker A

Maybe you're grieving a season that ended.

Speaker A

Maybe you're grieving the version of yourself that felt younger, faster, or more certain.

Speaker A

Maybe you're grieving dreams that got buried under responsibility.

Speaker A

And at the same time, there's wisdom in it, too.

Speaker A

That's the thing about this season.

Speaker A

It can hold both grief and gratitude, loss and wisdom, tenderness and strength.

Speaker A

I don't think we talk about that enough.

Speaker A

We act like midlife is supposed to be one thing, but really it's layered.

Speaker A

And if you've been feeling more emotional lately, I want to say this clearly.

Speaker A

You're not too sensitive.

Speaker A

You're not too much.

Speaker A

You may just be caring more than you've had language for.

Speaker A

No one told me I might start questioning who I am Now.

Speaker A

Let's go a little deeper here, because at some point, a lot of us start asking questions that we didn't expect to ask.

Speaker A

Who am I now?

Speaker A

What if I'm not the same person I used to be?

Speaker A

What if the role that defined me for so long starts shifting?

Speaker A

And that can happen because of so many things.

Speaker A

Work changes.

Speaker A

Kids grow up and leave.

Speaker A

Priorities shift.

Speaker A

Caregiving responsibilities evolve.

Speaker A

Life just keeps moving.

Speaker A

And nobody really prepares you for how disorienting that can feel.

Speaker A

For so long, many of us have been known by what we do.

Speaker A

We're the dependable one, the strong one, the one people count on, the one who just gets things done, the one who keeps everything together.

Speaker A

So when that starts to change, even a little, it can feel like the ground just shifts under your feet.

Speaker A

Who am I when I'm not the go to person?

Speaker A

Who am I when I'm not needed in the same way?

Speaker A

Who am I when I'm not the one that's carrying everything?

Speaker A

That's a big question.

Speaker A

And I'll be honest with you, I'm not just talking about this in theory.

Speaker A

I'm actually sitting with these questions right now.

Speaker A

I'm in a season where I'm seriously thinking about what retirement looks like for me.

Speaker A

And what I didn't expect was how much that decision would stir up questions that have nothing to do with finances or logistics.

Speaker A

It's questions like who will I be when I'm not defined by my job title?

Speaker A

What does a Monday morning look like when there's no place that I have to be?

Speaker A

What parts of my identity got wrapped up in my career without me even realizing it?

Speaker A

And I'll tell you, that's a little unsettling even when the change is one that you're choosing, because for so long, what I do has been so tied to who I am.

Speaker A

And midlife is asking me to untangle that slowly and honestly.

Speaker A

What I realized, identity in midlife is something that you have to keep uncovering.

Speaker A

It's not a one time answer.

Speaker A

You don't just arrive at it and then never question it again.

Speaker A

You peel back layers, you let go of old labels.

Speaker A

You discover parts of yourself that got buried under duty or survival or just the busyness of life.

Speaker A

And that can feel uncomfortable, but it can also be freeing.

Speaker A

Because maybe who you are is bigger than the role you've been living in.

Speaker A

Maybe it always was.

Speaker A

No one told me how protective I would become of my energy or that I didn't need permission to change.

Speaker A

Okay, this one right here, big shift.

Speaker A

Because I used to say yes to almost everything.

Speaker A

I would explain, over, explain, justify, make sure everyone was okay with my decision before I felt okay with it.

Speaker A

Now I'm a little quicker to say, yeah, that doesn't work for me, and keep it moving.

Speaker A

And here's what nobody told me saying no would feel this good once I actually started doing it.

Speaker A

Somewhere along the way, a lot of us started believing that if we slowed down or changed directions, we were letting people down.

Speaker A

That if we weren't as productive, we were failing.

Speaker A

That if we wanted something new, we were being selfish.

Speaker A

But what if midlife is actually the season where you're allowed to become more honest?

Speaker A

More honest about what you need.

Speaker A

More honest about what feels heavy.

Speaker A

More honest about what no longer fits what I've realized my energy is limited and is valuable.

Speaker A

Not every conversation deserves it.

Speaker A

Not every obligation needs a yes.

Speaker A

Not everything requires a response.

Speaker A

And protecting my peace, that's not selfish.

Speaker A

That's necessary.

Speaker A

You do not need permission to rest.

Speaker A

You do not need permission to want different things now.

Speaker A

You do not need permission to stop performing who you used to be.

Speaker A

That's not laziness, that's wisdom.

Speaker A

That's not giving up.

Speaker A

That's growing into yourself kind of in a different way.

Speaker A

And I can tell you that is one of the most freeing things that I'm learning right now.

Speaker A

So when I step back and I look at all of this, here's what I've realized.

Speaker A

I don't have to keep expecting my body to do what it used to do.

Speaker A

I can learn how to support her now.

Speaker A

I don't have to apologize for having emotions in this season.

Speaker A

They're just part of the story.

Speaker A

I don't have to let one role define all of me.

Speaker A

My identity is bigger than any title I've held.

Speaker A

I don't have to keep performing strength just because that's what people got used to.

Speaker A

I can be honest.

Speaker A

I can be human.

Speaker A

And I don't have to have all the answers to still be moving forward.

Speaker A

Now that might be the biggest realization of all.

Speaker A

Midlife is not about having everything figured out.

Speaker A

It's about becoming more honest, more grounded, more intentional about how you want to live now.

Speaker A

It's about paying attention.

Speaker A

What's helping, what's hurting, what needs to change.

Speaker A

What have I outgrown?

Speaker A

What still matters deeply?

Speaker A

Those are good questions.

Speaker A

Better questions, maybe, than the ones that keep us stuck in fear.

Speaker A

So let me ask you this.

Speaker A

What's something midlife is teaching you that nobody told you?

Speaker A

What are you realizing right now about your body, your emotions, your identity, your energy?

Speaker A

Because I have a feeling we're all learning more than we think we are.

Speaker A

I'd love for you to sit with this this week.

Speaker A

So if nobody told you these things about midlife either, let me just say you're not behind.

Speaker A

You're not broken.

Speaker A

You're not losing yourself.

Speaker A

You may be meeting yourself more honestly than ever before.

Speaker A

And that's not a bad thing.

Speaker A

In fact, it might be one of the most powerful things about this season.

Speaker A

I'll be real with you.

Speaker A

I am still trying to figure a lot of this out.

Speaker A

Some days, I feel like I'm getting it right.

Speaker A

Other days, girl, I am a mess.

Speaker A

But that's the thing about midlife.

Speaker A

Nobody told me.

Speaker A

You don't have to have it all figured out to keep moving forward.
