There are some things about midlife that nobody really prepares you for.
Speaker ANot your friends, not your family, and definitely not social media.
Speaker ABecause if you scroll long enough, it'll have you thinking, we're all just out here living our best, most put together lives.
Speaker AAnd meanwhile you're sitting there like, wait, is it just me or is this a little different than I expected?
Speaker AAnd I've had a few of those moments lately, moments where I've literally stopped and thought, okay, nobody told me this part, so today I want to talk about that.
Speaker BLiving our best life.
Speaker BIt's good to be alive, but it's best to truly let your spirit fly.
Speaker BSo celebrate the journey every single day.
Speaker BAging with grace and sty in our own special way.
Speaker AHey, friend.
Speaker AWelcome back to Aging with Grace and Style.
Speaker AThe place where we talk honestly about midlife without pretending everything is perfect and without acting like this season is something to fear.
Speaker BValerie.
Speaker AI'm Valerie.
Speaker AAnd if you've ever found yourself thinking, why didn't anybody warn me about this?
Speaker AThen this episode is for you.
Speaker AI mean, the deeper shifts, the things that catch you off guard because nobody mentions them until you're already in the middle of them.
Speaker ASo go ahead, get comfortable, and let's get into it.
Speaker AI'm going to share a few things no one really told me about midlife.
Speaker AAnd more importantly, when I'm starting to realize along the way.
Speaker ABecause the realization part, that's where things start to shift.
Speaker ANo one told me how different my body would feel.
Speaker ALet's just go ahead and start here, because this is usually where midlife shows up first.
Speaker ANobody really told me how much things could change.
Speaker ANot all at once, but in small ways that add up.
Speaker ARecovery takes longer, energy isn't always consistent, sleep can be hit or miss, and hormones, they're doing the most, they're doing their own thing, affecting mood, focus, and even confidence in ways you didn't quite expect.
Speaker AAnd it's not always dramatic.
Speaker ASometimes it's just you do something that used to be easy and now you need to sit down afterwards.
Speaker AYou eat the same way you always have, and your body responds differently.
Speaker AYou look in the mirror and think, okay, when did that happen?
Speaker AOr you bend down and pick something up and make a noise you didn't know you could make.
Speaker AAnd when did I become the person who grunts when they stand up?
Speaker AAnd let's be real, nobody told me about the random chin hairs either.
Speaker AI'm just saying, that part right there, completely unnecessary.
Speaker AAnd I'll give you some of my own examples because why not?
Speaker ASome days I sit at my desk for a while, and when I stand up, I have to just pause for a second, give my body a moment to remember what we're doing.
Speaker ABecause the stiffness showed up without an invitation.
Speaker AAnd apparently it's staying.
Speaker AOr I'll pass a mirror and catch myself looking at the lines on my face that weren't there before.
Speaker AFrown lines.
Speaker AAnd I have to decide in that moment, am I going to make peace with this, or am I going to let it ruin my morning?
Speaker ABut here's the one that caught me the most off guard.
Speaker AThere are moments now where I'll second guess myself on things I'm usually completely confident about, things I know, things I've done a hundred times, and out of nowhere there's this little voice saying, are you sure?
Speaker AAnd that one nobody warned me about, that one.
Speaker ABecause it's not just physical.
Speaker AIt sneaks into your head, too.
Speaker ABut here's what can make all of it even harder.
Speaker AMost of us spent years being told to just push through, to stay strong, keep going, and not make a big deal out of how we feel.
Speaker AAnd then midlife has the audacity to make it very clear that the old way doesn't always work anymore.
Speaker ANow what I've realized that doesn't mean something is wrong with me.
Speaker AIt means my body is speaking a different language now.
Speaker AAnd one of the biggest things I'm learning I don't need to fight my body the way it is now.
Speaker AI need to start listening to her.
Speaker AThat might mean resting more.
Speaker AThat might mean moving differently.
Speaker AThat might mean paying closer attention to sleep, hormones, stress, and the signals that my body is giving me.
Speaker ANot because I'm falling apart, but because I want to care for myself wisely.
Speaker AIn this season now, no one told me how emotional midlife could feel.
Speaker AAnd not emotional like dramatic.
Speaker AMore like tender, reflective, sometimes heavier than you expected.
Speaker AThere are emotions in midlife that can catch you completely off guard.
Speaker AYou might feel grief about things you can't quite name, sadness about how fast time is moving, anger about all you've carried, and sometimes a strange mix of gratitude and loss at the exact same time.
Speaker AClarity and confusion, peace and uncertainty both at once.
Speaker AAnd that can be confusing because a lot of us were taught to keep moving and not sit too long with what we feel.
Speaker AWhat I've realized Emotions in midlife are not a sign that something is wrong.
Speaker ASometimes they're a sign that we're finally slowing down long enough to notice what's been there all along.
Speaker AMaybe you're grieving a season that ended.
Speaker AMaybe you're grieving the version of yourself that felt younger, faster, or more certain.
Speaker AMaybe you're grieving dreams that got buried under responsibility.
Speaker AAnd at the same time, there's wisdom in it, too.
Speaker AThat's the thing about this season.
Speaker AIt can hold both grief and gratitude, loss and wisdom, tenderness and strength.
Speaker AI don't think we talk about that enough.
Speaker AWe act like midlife is supposed to be one thing, but really it's layered.
Speaker AAnd if you've been feeling more emotional lately, I want to say this clearly.
Speaker AYou're not too sensitive.
Speaker AYou're not too much.
Speaker AYou may just be caring more than you've had language for.
Speaker ANo one told me I might start questioning who I am Now.
Speaker ALet's go a little deeper here, because at some point, a lot of us start asking questions that we didn't expect to ask.
Speaker AWho am I now?
Speaker AWhat if I'm not the same person I used to be?
Speaker AWhat if the role that defined me for so long starts shifting?
Speaker AAnd that can happen because of so many things.
Speaker AWork changes.
Speaker AKids grow up and leave.
Speaker APriorities shift.
Speaker ACaregiving responsibilities evolve.
Speaker ALife just keeps moving.
Speaker AAnd nobody really prepares you for how disorienting that can feel.
Speaker AFor so long, many of us have been known by what we do.
Speaker AWe're the dependable one, the strong one, the one people count on, the one who just gets things done, the one who keeps everything together.
Speaker ASo when that starts to change, even a little, it can feel like the ground just shifts under your feet.
Speaker AWho am I when I'm not the go to person?
Speaker AWho am I when I'm not needed in the same way?
Speaker AWho am I when I'm not the one that's carrying everything?
Speaker AThat's a big question.
Speaker AAnd I'll be honest with you, I'm not just talking about this in theory.
Speaker AI'm actually sitting with these questions right now.
Speaker AI'm in a season where I'm seriously thinking about what retirement looks like for me.
Speaker AAnd what I didn't expect was how much that decision would stir up questions that have nothing to do with finances or logistics.
Speaker AIt's questions like who will I be when I'm not defined by my job title?
Speaker AWhat does a Monday morning look like when there's no place that I have to be?
Speaker AWhat parts of my identity got wrapped up in my career without me even realizing it?
Speaker AAnd I'll tell you, that's a little unsettling even when the change is one that you're choosing, because for so long, what I do has been so tied to who I am.
Speaker AAnd midlife is asking me to untangle that slowly and honestly.
Speaker AWhat I realized, identity in midlife is something that you have to keep uncovering.
Speaker AIt's not a one time answer.
Speaker AYou don't just arrive at it and then never question it again.
Speaker AYou peel back layers, you let go of old labels.
Speaker AYou discover parts of yourself that got buried under duty or survival or just the busyness of life.
Speaker AAnd that can feel uncomfortable, but it can also be freeing.
Speaker ABecause maybe who you are is bigger than the role you've been living in.
Speaker AMaybe it always was.
Speaker ANo one told me how protective I would become of my energy or that I didn't need permission to change.
Speaker AOkay, this one right here, big shift.
Speaker ABecause I used to say yes to almost everything.
Speaker AI would explain, over, explain, justify, make sure everyone was okay with my decision before I felt okay with it.
Speaker ANow I'm a little quicker to say, yeah, that doesn't work for me, and keep it moving.
Speaker AAnd here's what nobody told me saying no would feel this good once I actually started doing it.
Speaker ASomewhere along the way, a lot of us started believing that if we slowed down or changed directions, we were letting people down.
Speaker AThat if we weren't as productive, we were failing.
Speaker AThat if we wanted something new, we were being selfish.
Speaker ABut what if midlife is actually the season where you're allowed to become more honest?
Speaker AMore honest about what you need.
Speaker AMore honest about what feels heavy.
Speaker AMore honest about what no longer fits what I've realized my energy is limited and is valuable.
Speaker ANot every conversation deserves it.
Speaker ANot every obligation needs a yes.
Speaker ANot everything requires a response.
Speaker AAnd protecting my peace, that's not selfish.
Speaker AThat's necessary.
Speaker AYou do not need permission to rest.
Speaker AYou do not need permission to want different things now.
Speaker AYou do not need permission to stop performing who you used to be.
Speaker AThat's not laziness, that's wisdom.
Speaker AThat's not giving up.
Speaker AThat's growing into yourself kind of in a different way.
Speaker AAnd I can tell you that is one of the most freeing things that I'm learning right now.
Speaker ASo when I step back and I look at all of this, here's what I've realized.
Speaker AI don't have to keep expecting my body to do what it used to do.
Speaker AI can learn how to support her now.
Speaker AI don't have to apologize for having emotions in this season.
Speaker AThey're just part of the story.
Speaker AI don't have to let one role define all of me.
Speaker AMy identity is bigger than any title I've held.
Speaker AI don't have to keep performing strength just because that's what people got used to.
Speaker AI can be honest.
Speaker AI can be human.
Speaker AAnd I don't have to have all the answers to still be moving forward.
Speaker ANow that might be the biggest realization of all.
Speaker AMidlife is not about having everything figured out.
Speaker AIt's about becoming more honest, more grounded, more intentional about how you want to live now.
Speaker AIt's about paying attention.
Speaker AWhat's helping, what's hurting, what needs to change.
Speaker AWhat have I outgrown?
Speaker AWhat still matters deeply?
Speaker AThose are good questions.
Speaker ABetter questions, maybe, than the ones that keep us stuck in fear.
Speaker ASo let me ask you this.
Speaker AWhat's something midlife is teaching you that nobody told you?
Speaker AWhat are you realizing right now about your body, your emotions, your identity, your energy?
Speaker ABecause I have a feeling we're all learning more than we think we are.
Speaker AI'd love for you to sit with this this week.
Speaker ASo if nobody told you these things about midlife either, let me just say you're not behind.
Speaker AYou're not broken.
Speaker AYou're not losing yourself.
Speaker AYou may be meeting yourself more honestly than ever before.
Speaker AAnd that's not a bad thing.
Speaker AIn fact, it might be one of the most powerful things about this season.
Speaker AI'll be real with you.
Speaker AI am still trying to figure a lot of this out.
Speaker ASome days, I feel like I'm getting it right.
Speaker AOther days, girl, I am a mess.
Speaker ABut that's the thing about midlife.
Speaker ANobody told me.
Speaker AYou don't have to have it all figured out to keep moving forward.
